Man faces charges in bank robbery

BOARDMAN

A 39-year-old township man facing a robbery charge is being held on $25,000 bond as he waits for his next court appearance Tuesday.

Brandon Schmitt is accused of taking more than $5,000 from First National Bank at 7025 Market St. on Jan. 13. Schmitt was arrested at a motel in Moon Township, Pa., by U.S. marshals, taken to Allegheny County (Pa.) Jail on Jan. 21 and brought back to Boardman by officers Monday.

Schmitt previously had waived his extradition hearing.

As of Tuesday evening, Schmitt had not posted bond and was still in Mahoning County jail.

Tax booklets

YOUNGSTOWN

Tax booklets for Form 1040 are now available at several area libraries, including the main branch at 305 Wick Ave., said Janet Loew, communications and public relations director for Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Previously, the library hadn’t received the booklets and had directed patrons to the local IRS location, 10 E. Commerce St.

Open house

LORDSTOWN

The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, 545 Brunstetter Road S.W., will have a Valentine’s Day Open House from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Conferences reset

YOUNGSTOWN

The recent snow days that forced the closings of school Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 also wiped out both nights of parent-teacher conferences for the city schools. Those conferences have been rescheduled for 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at each of the district schools.

Parents should check at their child’s school for details.

ACTION meeting

Drilling speaker

LIBERTY

Dr. Jeff C. Dick, chairman of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Youngstown State University, will speak at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Liberty Township Administration Building on drilling for natural gas.

Dick has 30 years of experience on this subject. He will discuss the gas industry and its safeguards. He also will answer questions people may have about their water sources and how it may be affected by drilling.

Officers re-elected

WARREN

The Trumbull County Township Association re-elected all four of its officers for 2011 at a reorganization banquet. Atty. Mark S. Finamore was elected president, Sam Plott was re-elected vice president, Rebecca Whitman was re-elected secretary treasurer, and Donald Barzak was re-elected Ohio Township Association committeeman.

Bowling lanes closed

AUSTINTOWN

Wedgewood Lanes on Raccoon Road was closed Wednesday evening after firefighters were called to investigate smoke in the pro shop. A fire official said they have not yet determined the source of the smoke, but believe it was electrical.
