Film marks ’61 crash that killed entire U.S. figure-skating team

On Feb. 19, 1961, the entire U.S. figure-skating team, its coaching staff and 18 friends and family were killed in a plane crash in Belgium, where the team was headed for a competition.

To commemorate the tragedy on its 50th anniversary, the U.S. Figure Skating Association has produced “Rise,” a film about the event. The world premiere of “Rise” will be Feb. 17 as a special one-night event in theaters across the country, sponsored by local skating clubs.

The Youngstown Phantoms Figure Skating Club along with the Ice Zone will host a screening at 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at Tinseltown in Boardman. Tickets will be $13 at the box office.
