Boy who fled court is sentenced
Staff report
LISBON
A youth who fled from court and was later recaptured has been sentenced to the custody of the Ohio Department of Youth Services for at least six months or until he turns 21.
How long he serves will be dependent upon his conduct while in custody.
The 17-year-old boy was captured in late December after he ran from the Charles A. Pike Center, 260 W. Lincoln Way, after a hearing.
On Dec. 28, the boy kicked off his institutional shoes and took off in freezing weather while handcuffed.
Columbiana County Juvenile Court Judge Thomas Baronzzi heard of the escape, put on his hunting clothes, and found the youth outside of Lisbon. After some conversation, the boy surrendered to the judge. He was sentenced for the escape, which would have been a felony if he were an adult.
Judge Pike said the boy would benefit from treatment from the DYS.
The judge added that, “DYS has excellent counseling” for the youths.
Because of his age, the initial charge against the boy was not released nor was his name.
