Sugarcreek police officer and wife charged with theft

DAYTON

A southwest Ohio police officer and his wife were charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly shoplifting about $80 worth of merchandise at a discount store.

Sugarcreek Township police Sgt. Mark White said Monday that Wal-mart security employees caught Joseph and Ashley Purnell leaving the store in the Dayton suburb with DVDs and children’s toys Friday night.

White says the couple were taken to the police department with their toddler and released on their own recognizance.
