Michael Llodra of France defeated Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (4) Monday on the opening day. Llodra, the 2008 champion, won Davydenko’s first service game for the only break of the match and then saved two break points to take the first set. In the second set, Fifth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria downed Dutch wild card Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-4 to set up a second-round match with Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic downed German qualifier Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-4.

Third-seeded Maria Kirilenko has reached the second round after beating Alberta Brianti of Italy in three sets. The 25th-ranked Russian won 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 on Monday in a match that lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes. Veteran American Jill Craybas also advanced with a victory over former top-ranked junior Noppawan Lertcheewakarn. The 36-year-old Craybas, ranked 97th, won 6-3, 6-3 after a string of unforced errors from Lertcheewakarn.

Kristina Barrois of Germany rallied to beat Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 Monday to set up a second-round match against Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters. The 78th-ranked Barrois had seven aces and converted four of 13 break points at Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.

James Blake won his first competitive match since October, beating qualifier Jesse Levine 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. Blake had not played since losing to Lukasz Kubot in the first round in Vienna last October because of shoulder and knee injuries. Blake has fallen to 170th in the latest rankings.
