Historical society plans black history program

NEW CASTLE

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Lawrence County Historical Society will have its monthly meeting in the mansion, 408 N. Jefferson St.

This month, in celebration of Black History Month, the program will feature Jean Speight for the second in a series of programs on the black community in New Castle. This year the focus will be on black churches, clubs and other organizations.

Churches such as St. Luke AME Zion, which is celebrating its 166th year, and clubs such as Sunshine Kensington Club, which is celebrating its 101st year, will share stories from their history and the present. The stories will be written and shared with the community at large.

All historical society programs are free and open to the public. For more information call 724-658-4022.
