The head of the Ohio Turnpike is stepping down from his job overseeing the 241-mile toll road that runs across northern Ohio.

The Plain Dealer newspaper of Cleveland reports Executive Director George Distel has submitted his resignation to the Turnpike Commission board, effective April 1.

The 58-year-old Distel took the job in April 2008 under former Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat.

Republican Gov. John Kasich is expected to appoint a successor. A Kasich spokesman told the newspaper the governor has yet to make a decision.
