Boss was too tied up in football
I read a story on Vindy.com about football politics: an employee in a Chicago car dealership was fired for wearing a Green Bay Packers tie to work. His boss fired him because it went against the ad campaign the dealership had been running which involved the Bears.
This is ridiculous. Regardless of what ads the business was running, I highly doubt any customer going to buy a car would be so upset over a tie that they wouldn’t buy the car. Secondly, representing your sports team in the work place is something that is usually encouraged. Sure the Bears lost to the Packers in the race to the Super Bowl, but that’s no reason to force someone to take off something that represents who they are.
The manager didn’t even test what effect the tie would have on his customers, firing his employee early enough in the morning so that no one would see it, which to me isn’t fair. And now, with all the coverage this story is getting, he’s getting the bad press he was trying to avoid in the first place.
So was it really worth it to fire this man because he decided to wear a Packers tie for one day? Would sales have dropped that badly because he’s not a Bears fan? Football is great, but I don’t think it’s worth firing someone because they support a team that isn’t in your car ads.
