GREEN BAY, Wis.
On a day when the Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s basketball team honored its alumni and first coach, the current team showed that the program is still in pretty good hands.
The No. 21-ranked Phoenix set a record for margin of victory and fewest points allowed since Green Bay moved to Division I with a 84-25 rout of Youngstown State on Saturday.
“I had [assistant coach and former player] Amanda [Leonhard] talk in the locker room on what does it mean to represent the Green Bay alumni and the kids went out and represented our alumni really well,” Green Bay coach Matt Bollant said.
Green Bay (22-1 overall, 11-0 Horizon League) jumped out to a 26-0 lead and never looked back.
Youngstown State (3-19, 1-10) was held to program-record lows for points in a half (eight in the first half), points in a game and margin of defeat.
Celeste Hoewisch scored 14 of her game-high 20 points and Julie Wojta had 13 of her 17 points in the first half as Green Bay built a 49-8 halftime cushion. The Phoenix reserves played the majority of the second half.
Youngstown State’s Brandi Brown finally broke the opening drought with a 3-pointer at the 8:07 mark of the first half. The Penguins started the game shooting 0 for 13 with seven turnovers before Brown got them on the board.
Lydia Bauer scored 12 points off the bench and Hannah Quilling added 10 for the Phoenix, which won its 13th consecutive game. Wojta also added 11 rebounds and five assists.
Brown, the Horizon League’s leading scorer, led the Penguins with 15 points and eight rebounds.
