Volunteers needed to drive van for vets

Special to The Vindicator

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Anyone interested in volunteering as a van driver to transport veterans to the Butler VA Hospital or the Lawrence County VA Clinic should attend a meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 21 in the county commissioners’ meeting room in the basement of the Lawrence County Government Center, 430 Court Street.

The meeting was announced by Shirley Noga, director of the Lawrence County Department of Veterans Affairs.

Dave Viraq, ourtreach coordinator, and Paula McCarl, voluntary-service coordinator, both from the Butler Veterans’ Office, will speak about the process of volunteering. Volunteers must be licensed, insured drivers, pass a physical and attend approximately two days of training with a one-day refresher course annually.

Veterans who want to know more about the van services also should attend.

To schedule a ride on the Disabled American Veterans Van, call 724-658-5176. Calls should be made a week in advance. Those who reach voicemail should leave their name, telephone number and date and time of their appointment.
