Pop culture Q&A

Q. On A&E, I liked watching a show called “Billy the Exterminator” that rescued and relocated animals and destroyed cockroaches. He made the show interesting and funny. I want his show back on. Why did A&E stop putting it on?

A. Fear not, it appears the show will be back, with its Facebook page saying it will begin a new season in March.

To date, A&E has aired three seasons of the series about a pest- removal company in Louisiana, with the most recent airing last fall; the first two seasons are also on DVD.

Q. I remember a TV movie back in the 1970s or ’80s about a group of Earth people sent out into space to find a new planet to settle on. I taped it then but lost the tape. I think the title was something like “The Voyagers.” I would like to have it on DVD.

A. I suspect you are remembering “Earth Star Voyager,” a 1988 TV movie starring Brian McNamara and Duncan Regehr. It was also a pilot for a series, but one did not come to pass. And, unfortunately, it does not appear to be available on an authorized DVD.

Q. I was wondering if the TV show “Medical Center” will ever come out on DVD. Also, what is Chad Everett up to these days?

A. I do not know of an authorized release of the CBS doctor drama, which starred Everett and James Daly. Everett, who will be 75 in June, is still acting; he was in a couple of episodes of NBC’s short-lived “Undercovers.”

Q. A police drama called “The Bridge” debuted on CBS, I believe, last summer. It was about a police officer who became the union representative.

It only ran for about three episodes then disappeared even though it appeared several additional weeks in the TV listings. It looked interesting. What happened to it?

A. Not enough people watched it, and CBS ended telecasts of the Canadian-made drama. It did continue production for Canadian TV, although I do not know of a U.S. network picking it up.

Q. Last season I enjoyed two new shows: “Memphis Beat” and “Everglades.” Will they be back this season?

A. By “Everglades” I think you mean “The Glades,” an A&E series set in the Everglades. Both shows have been picked up for a second season. Look for them later in 2011.

Q. What happened to “Curb Your Enthusiasm”? We really miss the show.

A. The show comes and goes as creator-star Larry David feels inspired, and apparently he has some new ideas.

When the eighth season airs later this year — I have not yet seen an air date — it will have David moving from Hollywood back to New York and will feature guest appearances by Michael J. Fox, Ricky Gervais and Ana Gasteyer.

Q. On Jan. 16, I caught the very end of a “Skate for the Heart” ice-skating show from Youngstown, Ohio, on NBC.

There were approximately 10 young men dressed in suits who were standing on the stage and singing while the skaters were on the ice. Can you tell me the name of that singing group? They were amazing.

A. That was the a cappella group Straight No Chaser — and, having seen them perform in Cleveland not long ago, I agree they are amazing.

Originally hailing from Indiana University, they became a phenomenon after some of their performances were on YouTube. You can learn more about them and their recordings at www.sncmusic.com.
