HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way Agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley. It is located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business in the Center for Non-profit Excellence and our main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. HandsOn is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact that volunteering can have on our community. Community Meet and Greet: 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at HOVN offices, 5500 Market St. Suite 106, Boardman. We encourage volunteers and partner organizations to come and learn more about the services HOVN has to offer. Staff is available to help you discover new opportunities or help partner organizations develop stronger volunteer positions or programs. Volunteers can also learn more about our Lead Volunteer Training opportunities during these meetings. Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley: Junior Achievement needs assistance with program implementation.
American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley: Seeking volunteers to help with two Red Cross signature events. The first is Acts of Courage and the second is Power of the Purse. Both events will raise money to help sustain critical Red Cross services in the Mahoning Valley. Volunteers will be part of the planning committee and will work with other volunteers to execute the event. Teamwork, some fundraising and organizing experience is helpful but not mandatory. Both events will take place before July 1.
Community Legal Aid VALU Program: Community Legal Aid is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit Program in Mahoning County. Training will take place in February.
HOVN Youth Volunteer Corps: Are you between 13 and 18? Do you have some time this summer to participate in service projects? Contact Gretchen Brown at 330-782-5877 for more details, or e-mail at gbrown@hovn.org.
Goodwill Good Guides: You can have a huge impact on the life of a Mahoning Valley teen by committing only a few hours per month. Good Guides mentors can mentor youth in a one-on-one relationship or can engage in group mentoring with small groups of young people (five or fewer).
Operation Learning After School Tutor: Adults and Students age 16 and older are wanted to serve as tutors for elementary age students Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m.
Neighborhood Ministries: Seeking the help of several volunteers to pick up food from the local food bank for distribution. They are looking for individuals and groups who can help them once a month for a few hours.
RSVP Lead With Experience Program: Seeking volunteers, age 55 or older, individually or in groups who can work with local organizations to increase their capacity and impact the populations they serve. We’re looking for people who can mentor, tutor, lead volunteer programs, serve on boards and committees, teach an exercise class or represent an organization at meetings and community gatherings.
