Varsity wrestlers win two league titles

The Canfield varsity wrestling team won three out of four recent dual matches as they prepared for the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League tournament this weekend.

On Jan. 18, Canfield traveled to Greenville, Pa., to face a very tough Greenville team. The Cards were able to escape with a 44-33 win. Winners for Canfield were Anthony Spencer at 103, Korey Frost at 112, Zach Kay at 119, Nick Borucki at 125, Jake Dunbar at 130, Robby Reed at 135 and Alex Benedict at 140. The higher weights were more challenging, with only Eric Mirto at 160 posting a win.

On Jan. 20, Canfield traveled to Crestwood to compete in a double dual with Crestwood and Streetsboro. State-ranked Crestwood dealt the Cards a 58-15 setback. The only wins for Canfield were via Reed and Benedict, as well as Korey Frost.

Canfield rallied in the second dual of the night against Streetsboro, prevailing 53-18.Canfield winners included Spencer at 103, Frost at 112, Kay at 119, Jake Dunbar at 125, Reed at 130, Benedict at 135, Richard Rapone at 140, Lucas Daprile at 145, PJ Hido at 152 and Stephen Hamilton at 160.

The Canfield junior varsity team hosted a tourney Jan. 22. The Cards won this event, continuing an excellent season. Top placers for the Cards were Kyle Hido (first at 103), Steve Daprile (third at 103), Matt Dunbar (first at 112), Ben Siegle (second at 112), Nick Borucki (second at 119), Jake Dunbar (first at 125), Bryan Batton (third at 135), John Poullas (second at 145), Shawn Williams (second at 152) and Matt Ben (second at 171).

On Jan. 26, The Cardinals defeated Howland 33-28 to win the EOWL Division I dual meet championship and the All-American Conference tier title.
