Police investigate South Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating a South Side shooting that sent one man to the hospital with a bullet wound to his hip.

Frank Brown, 30, of West Evergreen Avenue, was shot just after 4 p.m. Thursday while driving near the intersection of Hillman Street and Chalmers Avenue. He is listed in stable condition.

An acquaintance of Brown’s told police she saw a dark-blue SUV pull next to Brown’s car and someone fire several shots into the auto. Brown reportedly then limped into the home of a relative, told people in the home he had been shot, then drove himself to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Police found shell casings at Hillman Street and Chalmers Avenue. Those casings were logged into evidence at the police station.

Student accused of disruptive behavior

Austintown

Watson Elementary Principal Sheila Palombo told police Thursday that an 8-year-old student said he was going to “catch the school on fire.” The third-grader also reportedly made threatening comments toward Palombo and a school secretary.

Teachers and staff reported to Palombo that the student was being disruptive in class Monday and made the comments while being escorted to the office.

Once in the principal’s office, the boy also was overheard repeating that he wanted to catch the school on fire while speaking to his mother on the phone, according to the police report.

Superintendent Vince Colaluca said the administration is working with the student and his mother to determine proper punishment. School officials told police they don’t wish to pursue further action by the police department but wanted the report on record.
