Poland girls swimmers sweep tri-meet at YSU


The Poland Seminary High School girls and boys swim teams split a tri-meet at YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium Jan. 25 against Alliance and Cardinal Mooney.

The Poland girls beat Alliance 136-91 and Mooney 136-46. In the boys meet, Alliance defeated Mooney 124-59 and Canfield 124-55.

For the Poland girls, Becca Stewart took first place in both of her individual events, being first to the wall in the 200 free with a time of 2:08.73. She also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:41.80. Stewart’s time in the 500 free garnered a new record.

Also placing first place in individual events was senior captain Elisa Hurtuk, winning the backstroke with a time 1:12.62. She was joined by Chloe Queen, who added first-place points in her 100 butterfly performance, finishing in 1:33.95. Also placing first was sophomore Jaci Mulally, touching the wall in the 100 free with a time of 1:10.40.

Adding second-place points in two events was junior Kayleigh Lavorini, who completed the 200 IM in 2:32.42 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.90.

Other second-place finishes were provided by Mulally (50 free, 30.59), Mirhanda Henneman (200 free, 2:34.72) and Courtney Lilak (100 back, 1:31.92).

Third-place points were contributed by Celia Melillo (200 IM, 2:57.55) and Madeleine Landry (500 free, 8:40.72).

The Poland girls performed well in relay events. The medley relay foursome of Mulally (back), Comstock (breaststroke), Melillo (butterfly) and Hurtuk (free) garnered first-place points with a finish time of 2:21.47.

The Bulldogs also won the 400 free relay, with Henneman. Hurtuk, Stewart and Lavorini finishing with a time of 4:28.54. In the 200 free relay, Melillo, Mulally, Stewart and Henneman took second place with a time of 2:03.39.

In the diving competition, diver Celia Mellilo scored 203.25.

For the boys, taking first place in both individual events was senior captain Ian Harker, winning the 200 free with a time of 2:05.40 and placing first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.12.

Matt Misko won the 200 IM in 2:39.39. He also placed third in the 100 back, touching the wall at 1:15.01. Sam Cowles placed third in the 500 free with a time of 6:51.92.

The Poland boys placed third in both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. The team of Robich (back), Misko (breaststroke), Cowles (butterfly) and Jake Amon (free) finished second with a time of 2:18.57. In the 200 free, Amon, Kyle Kirin, Cowles and Robich finished with a time of 2:03.66.
