Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the Roman Catholic archbishop emeritus of Washington, has been named a distinguished visiting scholar at the Library of Congress.
McCarrick will study the role of religion in diplomacy and the responsibilities of religious leaders to work for peace and care for the poor. The appointment comes with a monthly stipend for this year.
McCarrick served as archbishop of Washington from 2001 to 2006. Just weeks after his installation as archbishop, Pope John Paul II elevated McCarrick to the College of Cardinals.
McCarrick has degrees from St. Joseph’s Seminary and The Catholic University of America, where he earned a doctoral degree in sociology. He has represented the church and Catholic humanitarian groups in his travels around the world.
