Residential garbage collection in the city will be a day late the rest of this week. Ohio Valley Waste, the city’s garbage collector, had to close Wednesday because of weather conditions. The normal collection schedule will resume Monday.

Theft from employer

BOARDMAN

A 43-year-old Berlin Center woman accused of stealing more than $50,000 from a local restaurant will be back in court Tuesday .

Kimberly A. Hladun was charged with theft and misuse of a credit card Jan. 13. The theft was reported by her employer, Nicolinni’s Ristorant, 1247 Boardman-Poland Road. Hladun posted $8,000 bond.

3-count indictment

CLEVELAND

A federal grand jury has returned a three-count indictment charging Matthew Johnson, 30, of Boardman, with being a felon in possession of a gun and possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine and heroin, the U.S. Attorney said.

The first count of the indictment charges Johnson possessed a 9mm handgun Dec. 10, having been previously convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute crack cocaine in federal court in northern Ohio and of aggravated assault in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The second and third counts charge that, on the same day, Johnson possessed with intent to distribute about 12.1 grams of crack cocaine and about 1.2 grams of heroin. There are 28 grams in an ounce.

Guard assaulted

Anita Lundy, 30, of Maplewood Avenue is in Mahoning County jail after police said she assaulted a security guard at an East Side grocery store.

According to police, the security guard at the Save- A-Lot grocery store on McCartney Road noticed two children playing in a car in the store’s parking lot just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The guard told police he was worried the children would dislodge the car’s brake and the vehicle would roll forward into the store.

Reports say the guard used the store’s intercom and asked for the car owner to come to the front of the store. He went outside to question the children after getting no response.

The guard said Lundy came out of the store as he was near the car, grabbed him by the uniform and punched him in the mouth. The guard sprayed Lundy in the face with canned tear gas. Another guard came and helped handcuff the woman.

Reported beating

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating the reported beating of a 38-year-old woman on Federal Street downtown.

The woman told police she was walking along Federal Street just after 7 p.m. Tuesday and asked a man if he knew what time the city bus was expected to come. The man, she said, threw her up against a wall and began punching her in the head. She said the man also threw her to the ground and began kicking her.

She told police the attacker stopped beating her and ran off after a security guard from a nearby building intervened. The woman denied medical attention.

Fire at home

Austintown

A blaze on Tarrytown Road kept township firefighters busy Wednesday afternoon. The fire started just before 1 p.m. at 3632 Tarrytown Road, according to firefighters. Crews spent about two hours at the scene. No one was home at the time. The fire caused about $62,000 in damages. The cause is under investigation.
