Obama to speak about Egypt situation at 6:30 tonight

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama is expected to speak about the developing situation in Egypt Tuesday night.

Obama’s comments will be his first on the situation since Friday, and come after Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak announced he would not run for office again. American officials say a special envoy Obama dispatched to Egypt told Mubarak that the U.S. saw his presidency at an end and urged him not to seek another term in office.

In a recorded statement Tuesday, Mubarak said he would not seek the presidency again. But he says he will remain in office to oversee the peaceful transition of power ahead of the September elections.

The White House says Obama watched Mubarak’s remarks during a meeting with his foreign policy team in the Situation Room.
