Derrek C. Binion, 33, of Linda Drive Northwest asked Judge Peter Kontos to be treated for a substance-abuse problem, which he said caused him to rob the PNC Bank, 2365 Parkman Road Northwest, July 24, but he got three years in prison instead.

He received his sentence Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Binion, who pleaded guilty to a first-degree robbery charge in November, wasn’t eligible for drug treatment in lieu of conviction, court officials said.

Police said a man walked into the bank, told the teller to be quiet and give him money while placing his hand on a gun in the waistband of his pants. He received $4,260. Binion wore no mask and was photographed by the bank’s security camera.

Binion could have received up to 10 years in prison.
