Warren teen injured seriously in shooting

WARREN

A 15-year-old boy shot twice in the chest early Thursday was in critical condition late Thursday in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

The youth was shot when two men forced their way into a home in the 2000 block of Jefferson St. SW, in what is believed to have been an attempted robbery, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ TV.

The victim reportedly was driven to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle and later transferred to St. Elizabeth’s.

No arrests had been made as of Thursday evening.

Snow-removal costs for Mahoning slide

For snow and ice removal, Mahoning County Engineer Richard Marsico said his department has spent $6,086 on overtime, salt and slag, so far in the last quarter of 2011. That compares with $173,308 for overtime, salt and slag through Dec. 29, 2010. If the mild winter and cost savings continue, the money saved will help fund road improvements in 2012, he said Thursday.

Sebring honored

Sebring School District received the Auditor of State Award for its “clean audit report,” Ohio Auditor Dave Yost announced Thursday.

The award is presented to local governments and school districts upon completion of a financial audit, and which meet criteria such as filing timely reports and following generally accepted accounting principles.

Sebring was the only Mahoning Valley district to receive the honor.

Voting machines sold

Joyce Kale-Pesta, deputy director of the Mahoning County Board of Elections, told the board Thursday that Election Systems Software of Omaha, Neb., purchased the board’s old electronic-voting machines for $201,250.

According to Vindicator files, the county bought the electronic touch-screen voting machines from ES&S in 2001 for $2.95 million, with most of that amount coming from the federal government.

The company was the board’s vendor for the machines, which were the last items to leave the board’s old offices at the South Side Annex on Market Street. The board’s new offices are in Oakhill Renaissance Place on Oak Hill Avenue. The county returned to paper ballots in last month’s election.

Talk on Burt Building

Bill Lawson and Paul Ricciuti will discuss the restoration of the historic Harry Burt Building downtown when the Breakfast Club of Park Vista Retirement Community meets at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12 in its Gathering Room, 1216 Fifth Ave.

Lawson is director of Mahoning Valley Historical Society, which will be housed in the Burt Building. Ricciuiti is a consultant and former president at Ricciuti, Balog & Partners Architects.
