The man who has served as mayor in one of Northeast Ohio’s major cities since 1987 has been sworn in for his seventh term.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic took his oath of office while standing next to his grandchildren Thursday afternoon in the lobby of the Akron Civic Theatre.

The Democrat already has served longer than any mayor in the city’s history. He survived a recall vote two years ago and won re-election in November by a nearly 3-1 ratio.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports Plusquellic said after the oath that he’s “tougher” and “more energetic than ever.” He has said he wants to keep fighting for Akron residents.
