Man to be evaluated

YOUNGSTOWN

A 33-year-old West Side man accused of dragging a Youngstown State University police officer with his car and assaulting the officer, will have a psychological evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

The competency evaluation was ordered Wednesday by visiting Judge Diane Vettori in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Seth McDaniel, of South Hazelwood Avenue, will remain in the county jail on $700,000 bond on the two felony and two misdemeanor charges against him. He will be back in Youngstown Municipal Court Feb. 29.

Youth choir to sing

WARREN

The Warren citywide youth choir is preparing for a winter concert to be presented at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at New Jerusalem Fellowship Church, 2555 Palymra Road SW, in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The concert, in collaboration with Trumbull County MLK Dream Team, involves some 70 participants who performed at the Trumbull African American Achievers Association Festival and a summer concert at the Warren Amphitheater. The choir accepts members from 5 to 35 years old of any church affiliation. Rehearsals are at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 and Jan. 12 at Agape Assembly Church, 426 Nevada Ave.

Scholarship open

Catholic Collegiate Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to be used in the academic year 2012-13 at any college or university.

Applicants must be Catholic women in good standing with a university; must provide a recent transcript showing a 3.0 GPA or higher; and must have successfully completed one year of college. Letters of recommendation from her pastor and academic adviser or professor, and a short essay describing why she should be awarded the scholarship also are required. SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, the Business and Investment Center and the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, will present a business-startup seminar from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., focusing on starting a new or home-based business.
