Police say a strong lead toward finding Tuesday’s shooter hinges on talking to the victim in the hospital.

Police detective Capt. John Norman said he planned to make a trip to the hospital today to speak to 39-year-old Jeffrey Carpenter, a Girard resident.

The victim was shot in the abdomen and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, according to police.

The hospital would not release information on his condition.

Police said the shooting occurred about 1:30 p.m. at the victim’s apartment at 118 W. Liberty St., No. 2.

When they arrived, Norman said, they found him lying in the doorway of his apartment, which led them to believe the shooting occurred at the door.

Norman said he did not ask him many questions at the scene, even though the victim was conscious and alert, because he was in severe pain. The only information he was able to give Norman was that the shooter was a white male.

“We made sure to let him preserve his energy,” Norman said.

Witnesses told police they saw a white truck leave the scene and drive west toward McDonald. But there was no license plate given. And the shooting occurred at a business intersection downtown, leaving the possibility the driver of the truck was just running errands at another location, Norman said.

Interviews with neighbors produced no significant leads, Norman said.
