Erie, Pa. police officer improving since struck by SUV

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania police officer struck by an SUV on her way to a domestic violence call has been moved out of intensive care.

Forty-one-year-old Erie Officer Mary Schmeisser was hurt Dec. 14 while she ran across the road to back up other officers already at the scene about 5:20 p.m. that day. She had emergency surgery to reduce pressure on her brain and was initially listed in critical condition at UPMC Hamot hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman says today that Schmeisser’s condition has improved to fair.

Police have not charged the driver nor released her name, but say there’s no immediate indication the driver was speeding, had been drinking, or was otherwise negligent.

Schmeisser has worked for the city for 3 1/2 years.
