A 1941 fruitcake has sold for $525 to an Arizona man in an online auction to help the needy in southwest Ohio.

An Ohio company that handles estate sales and online auctions sold the cake Thursday. Elite Estate Group owner Larry Chaney says the buyer did not want his name released.

Chaney says the cake made and sold by The Kroger Co. in 1941 was returned to a Cincinnati-area store in 1971 with a note saying it had been purchased by a Cincinnati man.

Chaney says Kroger apparently didn’t want the cake, and the store manager kept it until his son was helping him get rid of things and gave it to Chaney.

Chaney says the money will go to feed the homeless in Clermont County east of Cincinnati.
