Thursday’s girls prep basketball results


Boardman 56, East 26

BOARDMAN

Emily Gibbs had 16 points, Megan Volosin scored 11 and Briana Fonderlin added 10 for Boardman, which made 23 of 36 free throws for its first win. A 22-point second quarter helped lift the Spartans (1-6). Chimicka Kennedy’s 16 points paced East (2-4).

Canfield 68, Fitch 53

CANFIELD

Sabrina Mangapora scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half to help Canfield (4-3, 1-1 All-American Conference American Division) hand Fitch its first loss. Abby Baker added 16 points and Rachel Tinkey had 12 for the Cardinals, who jumped out to a 19-10 lead after one quarter. For Fitch (5-1, 1-1), Megan Sefcik scored 21 points and Maura Bianco had 12.

Howland 64, Poland 14

POLAND

Erika Nites netted 26 points for Howland, as the team shot 50 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from behind the arc. Nites also grabbed six rebounds and drained seven 3-pointers. Taylor Williams added 14 points for the Tigers (6-1), as Natalie Silbaugh hit three 3-pointers for nine. Maura Bobby led Poland (5-2) with five points and six rebounds.

Lakeview 54, Jefferson 23

CORTLAND

Senior forward Ali Gagne had 30 points, mostly from the paint, to lead the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-0 AAC), who are coming off a 68-55 loss to Harding. Gagne and Calli Schmitt combined for 26 rebounds of Lakeview’s 49 rebounds. Rachel Francis’ nine points paced Jefferson, which made only seven of 43 goals.

Struthers 79, Hubbard 39

STRUTHERS

McKenna Shives made four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead Struthers (8-0, 2-0) in the AAC National Division game. Ashley Hefferon had 15 points, Ashley Kane 14 and Ashleigh Ryan 11 for the Wildcats. For Hubbard, Julia Clemente scored 11 points.

Girard 53, Liberty 38

GIRARD

Miranda Boyle had a game high 20 points for Girard. Hailey Spalla and Courtney Kellar each added eight. The Leopards were led by Vakeyla Merriweather who netted 14.

Champion 59, Newton Falls 56

CHAMPION

Mackenzie Kiser netted 23 points and Heather Shaver had 12 for Champion (5-1). Emma Nicholas and Gabby Lamont each added 10 points. The Golden Flashes were 13-22 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and with the win, Champion coach Jeff Thompson is three away from 300. Newton Falls (4-4) held the rebound advantage 36-23 and was led by Hannah Zelle with 13 points.

LaBrae 58, Campbell 24

LEAVITTSBURG

Ashlee Stubbs had 18 points and Maddie Kiser had 15 for the Vikings. Isabella Espaola’s nine points paced Campbell.

Crestview 59, Leetonia 23

COLUMBIANA

Ashley Harrison’s 24 points led all scorers and Morgan Newbauer added a dozen for the Rebels (7-2, 3-1). Nicole Mann had eight points for Leetonia (0-8, 0-4), which suffered 32 turnovers.

Mineral Ridge 41, Mathews 39

MINERAL RIDGE

Leah Whitmer scored 11 points and Abby Riffee and Alyssa Harkins each added 10 for Mineral Ridge. For Mathews, Dajna Ellic scored 11.

Western Reserve 67, Lordstown 60

LORDSTOWN

Colleen Kennehan scored 23 points, Sissy Stubbs had 16 and Linley Mamonis 10 for Western Reserve, which outscored Lordstown 38-26 in the second half. Sarah Cash scored 26 points for Lordstown (7-1), Kaitlynn Cassidy scored 12 and Sydney Negro had 10.

Maplewood 64, Heartland Christian 22

COLUMBIANA

Miranda Sloan had eight of her 16 points in the first quarter and Allison Bell had seven of her 15 points, also in the first quarter for Maplewood. Senior Ashley Weikert’s eight points and five rebounds led Heartland Christian.

West Branch 50, United 34

HANOVERTON

Rebekah Zets had 14 points and Pavin Heath added 13 for the Warriors (5-1). Taylor Smith’s 10 points paced United (7-2), which had 22 turnovers.
