Canfield Village Middle School’s fifth- and sixth-grade choir students ushered in the holiday season with music and singing during a Winter Concert Dec. 5.

Under the direction of Stephanie Summers, who welcomed the audience to the annual concert, the fifth-grade choir opened the show with “First Footprints” by Phyllis Wolfe-White and Karen Bodoin and followed the carol with “Over the River and Through the Woods,” arranged by Jeanne Julseth.

The 109-member fifth-grade choir closed its portion of the concert with a twist on a traditional favorite, “Jazzy Old St. Nick,” adapted and arranged by Ruth Artman.

Throughout the performance, fifth-graders Michael DeLucia, Dominic DeRamo, Jenna Troxil, Candice Kraykovich, Nathan Whitehead and Emily Duncko contributed narrations.

Also under the direction of Summers, the 174-member sixth-grade choir then took the stage for its performance, starting with “Holiday” by Barb Robertson. The choir then sang “Deck the Halls and Decorate” arranged by Ruth Elaine Schram.

To conclude its portion of the show, the sixth-grade choir chose “New Year’s Wish,” with words by Mary Donnelly and arranged by George L. O. Strid.

Ashley Veneroso, Stephanie Cooke, Madeline Remby, Kyle Johnson and Lauren Cline contributed narrations throughout the performance.

As the finale, in a departure from past years, Summers introduced the sixth-grade show choir, with their performance choreographed by Kandace Cleland, Canfield Village Middle School drama teacher.

“What you will see next is a bit of an experiment. We have 50 volunteers from the sixth-grade choir who will offer a ‘Glee-esque’ performance. Our sixth-grade choir is so large, we were able to break down into smaller groups and form the sixth-grade show choir. Please enjoy,” Summers said.

The sixth-grade show choir performed “Winterlight” by Amy Bernon, “Button Up Your Overcoat,” by B.G. DeSylvia, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson and “Hot Chocolate” by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri.

All choirs were accompanied by Jodine Pilmer on the piano.
