The kindergartners in Elaine Fabrizi’s and Stephanie Mateja’s Dobbins classrooms recently completed a sweet Christmas project.

On Dec. 13, parents and grandparents stopped by the school armed with bags of candy and licorice to help their kindergartners decorate sugar cookies and gingerbread houses.

Fabrizi has hosted the project since her first year as a teacher 30 years ago. Throughout the weeks prior to the event, the kindergartners read the books “The Gingerbread Man” and “The Gingerbread Baby.” The students completed gingerbread graphs to explore math concepts.

The decorating event began with sugar cookies making a trip into the ovens of the Dobbins kitchen. After they were properly cooled, the students covered the cookies in candies and sprinkles. The cookies are a part of a kindergarten service project, where the students will deliver the sweet treats and then sing to the residents at the Blackburn House.

Once the cookies were done, it was time for the students to decorate their gingerbread houses. The houses were built on a milk pint foundation, with graham cracker walls spackled on with frosting.

For each decorating team, the process was a little different. Grandma Cathy Fedigan preferred a hands-off approach with her granddaughter, Josey Norris.

“Josey is very artistic. I really let her follow her muse and decorate the house how she likes,” Fedigan said.
