Chamber players offer a concert

MERCER, Pa.

The Chamber Players of the Mercer County Historical Society, under the direction of Richard Konzen, will present a free Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel on the grounds of the historical society at 119 S. Pitt St.

The concert will feature a variety of classical selections, and a traditional Christmas carol sing-a-long. A cookies and punch reception will follow it in the social room.

A lasagna dinner will be served in the social hall before the concert at 6 p.m. for $5. Reservations are necesseary; call the MCHS before Wednesday at 724-662-3490.

Hoyt releases winter classes list

The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts has released its class schedule for the winter semester, which will run from Jan. 10 to March 3. Returning are a host of student favorites, including pastels, drawing, Italian, ballroom dance and ceramics.

A recent addition to the children’s programming is a two-day workshop on recycled jewelry making by Nora Gales, who will help participants to transform recycled and common objects into uncommon works of wearable art. Another new children’s offering is a three-day wood-shop workshop led by master carpenter and Hoyt staff member Dale Holzhauser. Potential projects include construction of a birdhouse, planter, bench and box with lid.

Recognized watercolor artist Tom McNickle is offering an eight-week course on landscape painting for beginners and experienced painters. Ghana-born artist and instructor Philip K. Gabah will offer an eight-week course titled “The Art of West Africa.”

David A. Gesue’s six-week course is titled “Great Films of the 21st Century.” Anne Neikirk will teach a one-day workshop, “Preserving Memories,” on digital photography.

Most course fees include materials, and studio time is available for work outside of class. Scholarships are available to those in need.
