Police say Ohio deputy wounded by friendly fire

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say an Ohio deputy wounded during a gunfight earlier this week was shot by a fellow officer, not by a man who police say had come out of his home firing.

Police investigating the shooting said at a news conference Thursday that it was very dark when Lorain County Deputy Charles Crausaz was accidentally shot under an arm Monday night. Multiple news outlets report that Crausaz was released from a Cleveland hospital on Thursday.

The fellow deputy who fired the shot is not expected to face criminal charges or disciplinary action. Sheriff Phil Stammitti says that officer has been placed on paid leave and will receive counseling.

Authorities said the gunman who started the shootout apparently shot himself to death later, in a field.
