Ohio's Athens County considers cutting juror pay in half

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Jurors would take a 50 percent pay cut under a money-saving plan before judges in Athens County.

Athens County commissioners this week also recommended increases in case filing fees and other court costs.

The Athens Messenger reports the commissioners’ proposal would pay prospective jurors $10 per day during jury selection, down from the current $20 a day. Those chosen to serve on a jury would be paid $15 during each day of a trial, down from $30.

An administrative assistant to the commissioners says the lower amounts are in line with what jurors are paid elsewhere in Ohio and would save Athens County at least $15,000 a year.

County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn says the judges have the final say.
