Contract Liquor Agency open

According to Bruce D. Stevenson, superintendent of the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, a new Contract Liquor Agency is opening in Canfield. Giant Eagle, located at 525 East Main Street in Canfield, has begun operating as a Contract Liquor Agency for the sale of spirituous liquor. The Agency is now open for liquor sales from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The division sells spirituous liquor (intoxicating liquor containing more than 21 percent alcohol by volume) through more than 458 private businesses statewide known as Contract Liquor Agencies. In Fiscal Year 2011, liquor sales reached $770.7 million with the division realizing a net profit of $237.2 million.

Wrapping paper, greeting card recycling

Canfield residents can collect their wrapping paper and greeting cards in brown paper bags and deliver to the Canfield Township Recycling bin located behind the fire station at 5007 Messerly Road from now until Jan. 31. Remove ribbons and exclude foil wrap. This is sponsored by the Recycling Division of Mahoning County and the Canfield Township Trustees. Christmas tree recycling program

Canfield residents may recycle their cut tree at the Canfield Township Fire Station, 5007 Messerly Road, from Dec. 26 through Jan. 31. Remember to remove decorations. This is sponsored by the Recycling Division of Mahoning County and the Canfield Township Trustees.

Swimming and diving team hosts breakfast

The Canfield High School swimming and diving team is hosting a pancake breakfast on Jan. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Canfield High School Cafeteria.

Breakfast will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and orange juice. A donation of $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 3 to 10 will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the Canfield High School swimming and diving team.

Ursuline Sisters make two recent appointments

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown have made two recent appointments. Peggy Eicher has been named director of Motherhouse personnel. Michele Ristich Gatts, media and public relations coordinator, has added the duties and title of development coordinator.

Kennsington Golf Club hosts Toys for Tots

Kennsington Golf Club in Canfield is collecting new toys for the Toys for Tots campaign. The club is offering a free nine holes golf gift certificate for each new toy that is donated. Toys can be dropped off at the club through Wednesday.

Torch Club meeting set

The Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs will meet on Monday at 6 p.m. for its dinner meeting.

The speaker will be Perc Kelty, former chief photographer for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube steel company. His presentation, “The Road Ahead,” will examine the political and economic challenges our current generation faces.

The meeting will be held in Pete’s Place, in Kilcawley Center, located on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is most cordially invited.

Podiatrists host shoe drive

Austintown Podiatry Associates, Dr. Karlock, Dr. Flauto and Dr. Arters will be hosting their annual shoe drive through Christmas. New or gently worn shoes can be dropped off at any of the three locations.

Horticulture students host Holiday Open House

Students in the Horticulture Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center host their annual Holiday Open House now through Dec. 19 at the school’s floral shop.

The Holiday Open House features silk wreaths, swags and arrangements, fresh mixed pine and spruce wreaths, fresh table centerpieces, pine roping and poinsettias all prepared by students in the program.

The floral shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday through Dec. 19. Orders can also be placed for any of the holiday items until Dec. 19. To place an order or for more information, please contact Mary June Emerson, Horticulture instructor, at 330-729-4000, ext. 1672.

Canfield alumni graduate from military training

Kyle Bassett and Bryan Clark graduated from Air Force Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas in September. They are now pursuing their technical training in security forces there. Bassett and Clark hope to go to college, while working at the Pittsburgh Air Force Base.

Bassett is the son of Cindy and Jim Bassett and Clark is the son of Lori and Jeff Clark. Both are 2011 graduates of Canfield High School.

Local audiologist elected president of national group

Eric Hagberg, owner of Hearing Innovations with locations in Boardman and Liberty, has been elected to serve as president of The Academy of Doctors of Audiology.

The ADA is a premiere network and resource for audiologists in private practice.

“Dr. Hagberg has been long-recognized as a leader within the profession of audiology,” said ADA Executive Director Stephanie Czuhajewski. “He was elected by his peers because of his proven leadership abilities and his tireless support of student initiatives that encourage autonomous practice.”

Hagberg took office on Nov. 5 during the annual ADA Member Business Meeting, which was held in conjunction with the ADA Annual Convention in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Hagberg has been serving hearing impaired members of the Mahoning Valley since 1975. He received his Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, a division of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified in Audiology and a Fellow of the Academy of Doctors Audiology and the American Academy of Audiologbrary hosts ‘Number 13’ contest

Taste hot chocolate at the library

The Canfield library invites teens grades 7-12 to warm up with a variety of hot chocolates on Jan. 19 at 2:30 p.m. Vote on your favorite and the library will post the results. Marshmallows are provided.

Library hosts Tales to Tails

The Canfield library will host “Tales to Tails” on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice.

Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Rhythm and Motion at the library

The Canfield library will host “Baby Brilliant: Rhythm and Motion for 2s and 3s” on Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. The program consists of a variety of music, dance, song and special activities guaranteed to appeal to the young and restless. Activities include the use of props, musical instruments and imagination.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with Babies and Books

The Canfield library will host “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanies by an adult.

Holiday musical features lyrics by local teacher

Kandace Cleland, a theater teacher at Canfield, wrote the lyrics for the upcoming one act musical “Where’s Rudolph?” at the Trinity Playhouse in Lisbon. The show will feature the Stage Left Youth Players and music by Jodine Pilmer.

There will a show tomorrow at 2 p.m. Tickets for these shows are $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.

In addition, there will be noon matinees on Dec. 10 and 17 that will include Lunch with Santa. Tickets are $13 for adults and $11 for students and seniors.

Boardman Park hosts Senior Fun Day

Seniors are invited to come to Boardman Park on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Senior Fun Day will include activities such as exercising, crafts, Bingo, lunch and blood pressure screening.

The event will take place in the Lariccia Family Community Center. Cost is $1.
