Police warn tow truck drivers of heists

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh police are warning tow truck drivers to beware of callers who want to junk or sell vehicles in deals that seem too good to be true.

Police are still searching for suspects in two robberies, one on Nov. 29, the other on Dec. 9, in which drivers were called to pick up such vehicles by someone only to have an armed accomplice sneak up on them and rob the drivers.

Police say drivers should avoid picking up vehicles in areas that seem unsafe, or if the caller’s phone number is blocked. Officers say a tow truck operators should drive past a location to check it out before stopping their trucks and should request the caller’s full name and identification before the transaction.

Neither driver was hurt in the robberies.
