More than 80 children will be paired with city police officers and Mahoning County deputies for the annual Shop with a Cop/Shop with a Deputy event Saturday.
More than 50 city children will be paired with active and retired police officers from Fraternal Order of Police Youngs-town Lodge No. 28.
The day begins with breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at Williamson Elementary School, 58 Williamson Ave.
At 10, children will be transported by a bus provided by J&W Limousine Services from the school to the Kmart store, 1209 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman, where each child will have $100 to spend. The program gives children the opportunity to buy gifts for family and friends.
Children participating in the event were selected from city schools based on school attendance and an essay defining the virtue of “Being a Good Citizen.”
Also Saturday, members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141, Mahoning County deputy sheriffs, will pair up with 30 children selected from the Salvation Army for breakfast at the McDonald’s restaurant at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 11, then travel by limousine to Kmart for shopping.
After shopping, the deputies will take the children to the Cinemark Movie Theater for a movie.
