4 dead after Pittsburgh house fire

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities say they don’t expect to release the names of a woman and three children killed in a Pittsburgh housing complex fire until autopsies are completed.

Investigators believe one of the children was playing with a cigarette lighter when a mattress caught fire in a second-floor bedroom of the unit in Nolan Court. The fire was reported just after midnight Thursday morning.

Fire Chief Darryl Jones says the victims were found inside the home. A fourth child, believed to be the twin of one of the victims, survived.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s deputy says examining the bodies and releasing the identities is expected to take much of the day.

The chief says emergency crews tried to reach the victims but were pushed back by the fire. Neighboring apartments suffered only water damage.
