YOUNGSTOWN

A 20-year-old Austintown woman is in Mahoning County jail facing felonious-assault charges after reportedly running another woman down with her car after a dispute over a man.

Janice Burney, 20, of Deer Creek Court, is being locked up on a $100,000 bond. She is set to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court next Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

Police arrested Burney and confiscated her 2003 Ford Taurus at her home early Tuesday.

According to police, Burney had been involved in an argument with another 20-year-old woman over “a boy” before Burney spotted the woman crossing the street at Arch and Pearl streets on the East Side at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told police Burney struck the woman forcing the woman to roll over the hood of the car.

Reports say the woman held onto the hood of the car as Burney drove for about 100 yards, driving across the sidewalk and striking a stop sign. She reportedly made an abrupt turn, forcing the woman off the hood of the car, then tried to hit the woman again before driving away from the area.

The woman suffered injuries to her right knee, chest and hands, but was noted by police to be walking and talking as she waited for an ambulance. She was taken to ValleyCare North Side Medical Center for treatment.

Austintown police later went to Burney’s home where she was held for Youngstown police.

Officers noted that Burney’s car contained damage consistent with the incident described by witnesses. The car also had a mark where it is believed to have been struck by the stop sign.
