Village Discount closes area store

YOUNGSTOWN

Village Discount Outlet, 3367 Mahoning Ave., closed suddenly at the end of business Monday, a company spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The store sold men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.

No reason was given for the closure. A call to company management was not immediately returned.

Village has stores in Dayton, Akron, Columbus, Cuyahoga Falls and Newport, Ky., according to its website.

Ribbon-cutting for urgent-care facility

WARREN

Hometown Urgent Care, 1997 Niles-Cortland Road, will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Hometown is a full-service facility with on-site X-rays, labs, EKGs and prescriptions. It also offers urgent care and occupational health services, including treatment for minor injuries, such as minor fractures, lacerations, sprains, infections and common illnesses such as flu, cold, coughs and congestion.

Hometown also offers health services for employers such as physicals, DOT/ Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing and industry-specific specialized testing.

Edward Jones plans open house

CANFIELD

Edward Jones, a financial-services firm, will host a grand opening and open house from 1 to 7 p.m. today at 3649 Canfield Road.

Lori Ferreri of the firm is supporting Beatitude House by using that office as a drop-off location for a supplies drive. Visitors to the open house may help Beatitude House by donating household supplies to the Edward Jones office during the open house.

Edward Jones, which ranked No. 11 on Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to work for” in 2011, is based in St. Louis.

Thousands apply for casino positions

CLEVELAND

A lot of people are betting on jobs at Ohio’s first casino.

Nearly 5,000 people filed online applications Monday, the first day for applying for 750 nongaming jobs at Horseshoe Casino Cleveland.

The positions include cashiers, bartenders, buffet supervisors and chefs. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, have a high-school diploma or equivalent and submit to drug testing and a criminal-background check.

Last week, the casino began training 600 prospective dealers selected from among nearly 12,000 applicants for those jobs.

The casino, which opens in March, plans a total work force of nearly 1,600.

FCC passes rules on overly loud TV ads

LOS ANGELES

Excessively loud television commercials should be a thing of the past, thanks to the Federal Communications Commission.

Responding to years of complaints that the volume on commercials was much louder than that of the programming that the ads accompany, the FCC on Tuesday passed the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act to make sure that the sound level is the same for commercials and news and entertainment programming.
