In Austintown, street names will grace elementary buildings
AUSTINTOWN
Elementary buildings will be honored by street names.
Parents, principals, administrators and board members had input on the names, which were chosen to represent the elementary schools that will be replaced by the district’s new kindergarten-through-second and third-through-fifth grade buildings.
School-board member Tom Stellers informed his colleagues that the U.S Postal Service in Cleveland has approved the school district’s names for five new thoroughfares on its campus.
Lynn Kirk Loop will be accessible from Idaho Road and lead past the district’s new elementary building.
Lloyd Loop also will lead past the district’s new intermediate school.
The roads will connect to Davis Drive, which will extend to Raccoon Road.
Woodside Way will connect Davis Drive to the board’s office at the middle school, while the main drive to the middle school, off Raccoon Road, will be called Frank Ohl Place.
Watson Way will connect Woodhurst Drive to Lynn Kirk Loop and Falcon Drive will be located off Burkey Road and passed the high school.
In other board business Tuesday, a $1,000 donation was accepted from the General Motors Corp. for the robotics team
The board also approved, in accordance to state law, increasing the minimum wage from $7.40 an hour to $7.70 an hour effective Jan. 1.
The financial impact of the wage increase will be minimal, said Mary Ann Herschel, the district’s treasurer, because there are few people working within the district who receive minimum wage.
Also, Louis Chine was honored, having served as a board member from 2008-2012.
“You are our guy without a tie, and we like you that way,” said Kathy Mock, the board’s president.
Harold Porter, a 1988 Fitch graduate, will take Chine’s place on the board in January.
Chine will remain on the district’s construction committee as a community member.
