Two die in crash in Columbiana County SALEM

A car accident killed two people Sunday after a tractor- trailer slammed into a car that had failed to properly yield, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The collision on state Route 45 at state Route 165 sent both the truck and the car into a ditch, the OSHP reported. The truck driver sustained minor injuries from the accident. As of Sunday, the names of those killed were not released while the highway patrol attempted to notify the next of kin.

Valley tops 100-year record for wet year

The trace of precipitation recorded at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport over the weekend is sufficient to make 2011 the wettest year on record in the Mahoning Valley.

As of Sunday night, the National Weather Service had recorded 50.82 inches of precipitation for the Valley since Jan. 1, which is 0.01 of an inch more than the previous record of 50.81 inches set in 1911.

According to the NWS, rounding out the top-five wettest years in the Valley are 1956 with 48.58 inches; 2006 with 48.47 inches and 1950 with 47.35 inches.

Christmas bird count in Trumbull

The Trumbull County Christmas Bird Count will be Sunday. People who live in Champion Township, Bristolville, North Bloomfield, West Farmington, Mecca Township and Cortland are encouraged to watch their feeders and write down the species of bird and numbers of each species.

The count was started in 1900, with the county starting its participation in 1976. It is conducted in North America and Central America.
