Six Youngstown State University students placed second nationally in this year’s Green Energy Challenge in both their team project presentation and the poster competition, winning $2,800.

For the national competition, the team traveled to San Diego this fall as one of three finalist teams to present their project, which involved a full-scale energy audit and upgrade to YSU’s Cafaro House residence hall.

The team beat out several others from Purdue, Texas A&M, Oregon State, Southern Polytechnic University and more in the initial round of judging in May. It’s the second year in a row that a team from YSU placed in the top three teams in the nation.

This year’s team includes sophomore David Wright of Youngstown, an electrical engineering technology student; freshman Ethan Parks of Greenford, an electrical engineering technology student; graduate student Justin Hosseininejad of Austintown, who is studying engineering; junior Jason Nutt of Cortland, an electrical engineering technology student; Jarrett Scacchetti of Canfield, a third-year student in electrical engineering and applied mathematics; and senior Michael Sammartino of Austintown, an electrical engineering student.
