Warren copper thefts

WARREN

CenturyLink Inc. has experienced numerous copper thefts this year in Greater Warren, causing potentially dangerous disruptions for customers and costing thousands to repair.

The theft of live cable causes outages that impact customer service and safety, including hospitals, schools and public safety organizations.

On Friday, CenturyLink crews were working one mile east of Ridge Road on Everett Hull Road NE in Fowler Township.

CenturyLink asks that residents be on the lookout for suspicious activity. The company believes the thefts are occurring during the early morning hours after midnight. If CenturyLink crews are working, they will be in trucks identified with the CenturyLink logo with lights projected onto the work area. Anyone who has information about the theft of copper cable is asked to call 911. People can also call 911 if they see a cable theft in progress.

Storm the police dog is back on duty after 10 days in quarantine for taking down an 8-year-old boy playing in a yard. Police Chief Gus Sarigianopoulos said the dog returned to work Tuesday.

Storm had been off the job since Nov. 25 after he chased an 8-year-old boy playing in his grandmother’s yard. He was on a walk with his handler, Patrolman John Gulu, at the time, but the two were not on duty. Gulu was walking him and had let him go in a fenced area. The dog escaped when Gulu was trying to leash him again.

Storm pulled the boy to the ground and ripped his clothing. He left a red mark on the boy’s arm, but did not bite him, said Detective Sgt. John Rusnak, who responded afterward. Storm faced the quarantine under state law. He was examined by a vet; Gulu told Sarigianopoulos that he believes the dog was only trying to play.

Store confrontation

WARREN

A Trumbull County grand jury has sent charges to Newton Falls Municipal Court against two Mahoning County residents accused of taking video games from the Newton Falls Pamida store, then threatening an employee while fleeing Sept. 26.

Ashley R. Perry, 26, of Mock Road, Berlin Center, and Raymond Sugar, 28, of West Middletown Road, Green Township, face misdemeanor charges of petty theft and assault.

They were bound over from Newton Falls Municipal Court on felony charges related to the incident, but the grand jury approved misdemeanors instead.

Newton Falls police said Sugar and Perry attempted to take video games from the store, but store personnel confronted them.

One of the two reportedly placed a can of pepper spray to the face of an employee and threatened to spray him. The employee grabbed the video games, valued at $540, and the suspects fled.

Innocent plea issued

WARREN

Gina Ellis, 27, of Swallow Street Southwest pleaded innocent Friday to felonious assault. She’s accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the back at 1:30 a.m. Friday at their home.

She was released from the Trumbull County jail after posting $3,500 bond.

The boyfriend, Jesse George, 36, of the Swallow Street address, pleaded innocent to misdemeanor domestic violence.

Police said the couple returned home from drinking at a West Market Street tavern and argued, resulting in Ellis stabbing George with a kitchen knife. Ellis said she stabbed George only after he hit her in the face and head and pushed her into a kitchen cabinet, causing her to fear for her life. George said he struck Ellis after she stabbed him.
