In a twist toward the feline side, Canfield library’s Tales to Tails program belonged to Willie the cat Nov. 21. During his first reading program, Willie had the place, and children readers, all to himself — and he was enjoying all the attention.

According to Jane Adams, Canfield library’s children’s librarian, Willie was the only Tales to Tails participant who was available that evening.

“We usually have two to three dogs for the children to read to, but tonight must not have been a good night for them, so we are lucky to have Willie here,” Adams said.

The Tales to Tails program helps children develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading by reading to the K-9’s for Compassion therapy animals. The program is open to any school-aged child. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome and participants may bring a book of their choice or choose one from the library.

Willie, a 2-year-old ‘Heinz 57’ mix, traveled to the library with his owner, Susan Calvin. They are a volunteer team registered through the Delta Society Pet Partners Program and a member of the local K-9’s for Compassion.

“There are 49 dog teams who participate in K-9’s for Compassion, and one cat team — us. We are new to the group and it is a wonderful group,” said Calvin.

Calvin adopted Willie from the Columbiana County Humane Society, where she used to volunteer.

“Willie has no problem working with the other dogs. He even lives with a dog — a Bull Mastiff,” said Calvin.

While this was Willie’s first reading program, he’s not new to visiting with people. He and Calvin have participated in programs at South Range Schools and assisted nursing homes.

Any child interested in participating in the Tales to Tails program is encouraged to register by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library. Walk-ins are also welcome.
