To celebrate their 50th day of school, kindergartners and first-graders at Stadium Drive Elementary rocked around the clock on Nov. 15 with 1950’s-themed celebrations throughout the school.

In their third-annual 50th day celebration, kindergarten teacher Tami Nero and first-grade teachers Heidi Peachock and Melissa Struharik teamed up to provide learning experiences and fun for their students through various activities.

The fun began when the students arrived at school in the styles of 60 years ago, including slicked-back hair and leather jackets on boys and poodle skirts and pigtails on the girls.

“We never shy away from turning our celebrations into opportunities for learning. Today, we’re focusing on many different math skills for the kindergartners and first-graders,” explained Nero.

In Nero’s classroom, students searched for ‘50’s words in a word search, counted to 50 as they strung beads for necklaces and bracelets, enjoyed pink lemonade and bubble gum and attempted to eat lollipops in exactly 50 licks.

Soon after, students headed to Peachock’s classroom to learn how to swing dance with instructor Bob McPhail of Ballroom with Style in Girard. In no time, the kids were swinging to hits by Elvis Presley and Little Richard with the help of McPhail.

Students then studied math in Struharik’s classroom, by practicing tally marks up to 50, grouping and counting objects in five different piles and playing the board game Trouble.

“The next 50 days are going to be even better,” promised Struharik at the celebration.
