In October, the Poland Fire Department was named the Volunteer Fire Department of the Year by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

To recognize that honor and to continue to support the hard work of the Poland firefighters, the Poland Rotary donated $1,000 to the Western Reserve Fire District Firemen’s Association.

The donation was made possible through the fundraising of Rotarian Matt Bodine, who chaired the club’s second-annual Car Cruise in August.

Firefighter Jacob Zimmerman and Lieutenant Lee Inglold visited the Rotary’s Nov. 16 meeting to accept the check to the Firemen’s Association and tell the group about the work of the Poland department.

“I think our firefighters are very similar to everyone here in the Rotary Club— we are all volunteers who offer a many kinds of community service in Poland,” Ingold said during the meeting.

Ingold explained the work of the Firemen’s Association and how its funds provide for equipment, training, and community education and charity programs.

Ingold said that volunteer firefighters visit the station every Tuesday to train, and that their exemplary training has led the department to never lose a firefighter on duty since 1923.

As Bodine and Poland Rotary president Stephen Zentko handed over the $1,000 check to Ingold, the firefighter was thankful but humble on behalf of his fellow volunteers.

“We don’t look for glory, we just do what we have to do to keep the community safe. Your support is very much appreciated,” Ingold said.
