Park roads to close
Park roads to close
Youngstown
Several Mill Creek MetroParks roads will close Monday for winter.
Effective Monday, these roads will close to vehicular traffic: Chestnut Hill Drive, between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur; High Drive, between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive; Calvary Run Drive, between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue.
These roads will close because snow and ice create slippery conditions due to limited shoulders, lack of guardrails and steep grades, according to a MetroParks news release.
The roads are available for various recreational uses, such as hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and sledding.
All roads will reopen in the spring when weather permits.
Grant for YWCA
WARREN
YWCA Warren has received a $5,000 grant from the Best Buy Children’s Foundation to support the Teen Challenge 20/20 program, in which Warren K-8 students will learn about ecosystems locally and abroad.
Challenge 20/20 is based upon Jean-Francois Richard’s book, “High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them.” It is an Internet-based program that pairs classes from schools in the U.S. with counterpart classes in schools in other countries.
Together the teams tackle global problems to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own communities.
Commended for aid
WARREN
The Trumbull County commissioners have commended Ken Kubala of Warren for using the Heimlich maneuver on a co-worker at the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office on Oct. 26 to dislodge a large pill she was choking on.
Kubala began working for the engineer’s office as a safety-compliance manager Oct. 11.
Kubala said he noticed two women assisting the choking woman at the engineer’s office and decided he needed to act.
He got behind her and pressed both hands into her upper abdomen. After four to five tries, the pill “popped out, just like you see on TV,” Kubala said. “I’m fortunate it worked. You could tell she was pretty distraught,” Kubala said, adding that he took a class several years ago that included first aid.
