NFL roundup Thursday’s news and notes
49ers: The San Francisco 49ers have signed offensive lineman Alex Boone to a contract extension through the 2015 season. General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement that the 49ers are “pleased with the progress” Boone has made since the former Ohio State lineman joined the franchise as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Baalke also said Boone “is a great example of what hard work, dedication and focus can do to further a young player’s career.” Boone is a reserve on San Francisco’s offensive line but is among a seven-man rotation that sees considerable playing time. He spent 2009 on the practice squad, was inactive until the final game last season and has played in all 12 games this year — mostly in short-yard situations and on special teams.
Colts: Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay is confirming what most have long suspected: Peyton Manning probably won’t take a snap this season. Irsay told Indy television station WRTV on Thursday that he “doesn’t see” even a glimmer of hope of getting No. 18 back on the field this year. Irsay declined an interview request from The Associated Press on Thursday. It’s no surprise. Manning hasn’t even thrown with teammates since having neck surgery Sept. 8 and with only four games left and the quarterback just now able to ramp up his rehab regimen, it was highly unlikely Manning could play before the season ends Jan. 1 at Jacksonville. Without Manning, the Colts have sunk to 0-12. But Manning’s doctors say he is progressing, and Manning has said his neck is stable.
Vikings: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson returned to practice Thursday on a limited basis, a big step toward healing from a sprained left ankle. Quarterback Christian Ponder, however, didn’t practice as he nurses a right hip pointer that is jeopardizes his chance to play Sunday at Detroit. Peterson has missed the last two games with his injury, but he made significant strides in cutting and planting on his foot without pain. “It was really encouraging to see some of the things he was able to do,” Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said. “He’s headed in the right direction, far more improved than he was a week ago.” Peterson was unavailable for comment, but the team has sensed his eagerness to be back on the field, despite the 2-10 record.
