The Canfield wrestling team began the season last weekend as the varsity traveled to Cuyahoga Falls and the JV squad wrestled at Lake.
Korey Frost went 5-0 at the Cuyahoga Falls Duals to win the 113-pound championship and led the Cards to a 4-1 dual meet record. Canfield defeated Cleveland Benedictine (63-18), Akron Hoban (65-16), Villa St Joseph (66-7) and Cuyahoga Falls (36-33). The Cards fell 44-25 to Barberton.
“While we have a very young team, we have a lot of talent,” said Canfield coach Dean Conley. “Most importantly, our kids put in a ton of work in the offseason, attending camps, tournaments, and open mat sessions. We will be very competitive this year.”
Other top performances for the varsity squad included Stephen Daprile (4-1 at 106 pounds), Zach Kay (4-1, 120), Anthony Spencer (2-1, 126), Matt Dunbar (1-1, 126), Jake Dunbar (4-1, 132), Ben Gleichert (3-2, 138), Shawn Williams (4-1, 145), Steve Hamilton (3-2, 160), Stan Socha (4-1, 182), Sam Connor (3-2, 195), Joe Kolesar (2-2, 195) and Curtis Burns (4-1, heavyweight).
At the JV event at Lake, Ross Duffet, Ben Siegle, Adam Nye and John Poullas each went 3-0 to lead Canfield. Kyle Hido was 2-1.
Wrestler of the Week awards were given to Frost for his 5-0 record at Cuyahoga Falls and Duffet and Nye for their 3-0 records at Lake.
