Boys basketball lose to Jefferson

The Austintown boys varsity basketball team lost their season opener to Jefferson 42-38. Leading the way for the Falcons were Will Mahone with a game high of 18 points, five rebounds and two assists. Dan Chepke added 14 points, three assists and two blocks.

The Falcons had the lead at the end of the first and at intermission, only to see Jefferson battle back in the third. The game went down to the wire with the Falcons coming up short on a few opportunities. The Falcons defense had 15 steals, but did not capitalize on those opportunities.

Fitch’s Jakovina commits to YSU

Fitch senior Jay Jakovina verbally committed to the Youngstown State track and field team.

Jackovina placed second in the high jump at last year’s indoor state meet with a height of 6 feet, 8 inches.

He also won an outdoor district title and missed qualifying for the state outdoor meet by one spot, finishing fifth at the Division I regional with a leap of 6-7.
