Art sale and show to accompany ‘Scrooge’

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Playhouse will be opening “Scrooge, the Musical” today, and it will run this weekend and Dec. 16, 17 and 18.

Along with the show, the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society will have a painting show and sale dedicated to a founding member, Phyllis Huggins, who recently passed away.

Tickets may be reserved by calling The Playhouse at 330-788-8739.

Huggins was born in Punxsutawney, Pa., and from the time she was small she wanted to paint. She would buy 10-cent paint sets and work on typing paper.

At 20 she got a job at Woolworth’s 5&10 painting signs and decorating windows and displays.

After marrying and while raising five children, she expanded her art interests. She made porcelain dolls, had her own kiln and taught knitting, ceramics and china painting in her home.

Huggins, a Hospice of the Valley volunteer, painted scenes of Mahoning County and made greeting cards.

The cards have been selling for years, making thousands of dollars for Hospice. They still are available.

In 1982 she helped found the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society.
