Village council approved a measure Tuesday to set aside $65,000 next year to use as matching funds should the village receive a grant for paving.

The village has applied for a $146,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for a paving program that would include parts Second Street, Riverside Drive, Alverne Drive and Johnson Place.

“We went strictly with the worse streets,” said Street Commissioner Russell Beatty.

The Ohio Public Works Commission asks local governments to approve legislation that sets aside matching funds.

That legislation does not guarantee the village will receive the grant, and it does not prevent the village from denying the grant either.

“I think the wise thing to do is to keep our options open,” said Councilman Bill Dunnavant.

Beatty also updated council on the leaf program, which will end today.

“The leaf machine died. We’re finishing with a front loader,” Beatty said.

Street department employees have been raking the leaves into the truck since the leaf machine broke down about a week ago, he said.

Council discussed options to repair or replace the machine but did not make any decisions.
